BEGINNING OF THE MEMORY

P1400057.jpg

"Beginning of the Memory" is a multifaceted installation project currently in its formative stages. This web space serves as a platform to share glimpses of the evolving elements that will ultimately shape the content and narrative of this installation.

At the heart of the project lies the creation of small clay casts, meticulously modeled from late 19th-century brass molds. These molds, originally used to produce gold and silver ornaments, depict revered deities from the Hindu pantheon. Passed down to me, this collection of molds—this "box full of gods ready to be reproduced"—represents faith in multiplicity, both tangible and symbolic.

The project delves into the complex traditions of idol worship in India and the Hindu diaspora worldwide.  It unfolds as a form of practical research—an exploration of mark-making, reproduction, invention, and the craftsmanship that underpins the stylization and canonization of cultural histories.

This growing body of work spans a diverse range of media, including woodcut prints, paintings on panels, beaded sculptures, textiles, and clay forms. Uniting these varied mediums is the consistent incorporation of Gujarati text. Language becomes a tool for cultural reclamation. The project serves as a, perhaps ironic, reflection on the idea of inheritance both personal and cultural.

Through poetic and satirical text the project prods at the discomforts of contemporary society. The language weaves a reflective, inquisitive thread through the work. I am attempting to contradict and challenge things  that often go unnoticed in the intersections of faith, heritage, and modernity. "Beginning of the Memory" will be a mirror that reflects, distorts, inherited beliefs. It will encourage the audience to engage with the unease of what lies beneath the surface.
